The Course Uncovered

You'll tee off high where the Ozark winds sigh,
With limestone and cedar below the sky,
Each hole is a postcard, each green a small stage,
A page from the hills, turning page after page.

So, breathe in the pine, let your shoulders go slack,
The cliffs hold the drama, so you needn't hold back,
Swing easy, look out, and let the view have its say,
There's no cliffhanger here, just a perfect round's day.

Cliffhangers: A Long-Awaited Golf Course in the Ozarks

Somewhere high above the valleys of southern Missouri, there is a tee box tucked inside a cave. Water falls in front of you. Limestone rises around you. Beyond the curtain of the waterfall, sunlight catches a small patch of impossibly green grass below. You have a golf club in your hand, but for a moment you almost forget why.

This is the third hole at Cliffhangers, the remarkable 18-hole par-3 course at Big Cedar Lodge. The hole is called Lion's Den, and the shot is only about 115 yards. On another golf course, that might mean a comfortable wedge. Here, nothing feels quite so ordinary. You stand inside the mountain, looking through falling water toward your target, and it occurs to you that perhaps this isn't really a story about golf at all.

Through it All at the Lion’s Den

Perhaps it is a story about the land. Because long before anyone thought about greens and bunkers here, before Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Fazio, Bill Coore or Ben Crenshaw ever came to design golf in the Missouri Ozarks, there were the rocks. There were the forests. There were caves hidden beneath the hills and springs finding their way through limestone. There was the White River winding through the valleys below. And there were people who kept arriving, generation after generation, looking at this place and imagining something. Cliffhangers is simply the newest chapter.

The Beauty of the Ozarks

To understand this golf course, you must look beyond the scorecard. The Ozarks are old. Really old. Their rounded mountains and deeply cut valleys tell a different story from the sharp, dramatic peaks of younger mountain ranges. Time and water have done much of the work here, slowly carving through ancient layers of limestone and dolomite.

Let’s Play the Course…

Hole 1

Affectionately referred to as Horizons. It measures only about 65 yards. You can pull out a wedge. Or, wonderfully, you can putt. The contours were created so that a golfer can send the ball rolling down the hillside toward the green. It is almost as though the course is telling you from the very first shot: Forget what you normally do. That is a prelude to what this course is about.  Use of your imagination and tap into your creativity.

Begin the Fun at Hole #1

Hole 2

The Cascades is aptly named. Water tumbles and swirls all around the green, and from the tee box, perched high above it, you look out over the hills beyond. The views are breathtaking, especially the back edge of the green, which melts into the horizon like an infinity pool. It's short but sweet, and the journey to the putting surface is half the fun: the cart path winds through limestone rock and past tumbling waterfalls before you reach the green. But first, you must find it. Miss left, and your ball ricochets every which way. Come up short, and it is water-bound. Go long or right, and it's a trip down the hill. Best to hit the green!

To Infinity and Beyond at the 2nd Hole

Hole 3

Then you arrive at the Lion's Den. Driving up is only part of the fun: the cart carries you through the first stretch of the cave and parks just shy of the tee box. Step out of the cart, and you're standing inside the cave. During construction, according to Big Cedar, a mature mountain lion was spotted repeatedly around this spot, and the name stuck. You tee up on astro turf tucked into the cave, with water falling all around you, and it feels a bit like the Wonka chocolate factory. Your tee shot leaves the darkness of the cave, passes through the shimmering curtain of the waterfall, and sails toward the green below. Sand traps guard the left side, so aim for the middle of the green. When you arrive, be sure to thank the Oompa Loompas. And suddenly, "par three" seems like an awfully inadequate description.

The course continues like a story in which every turn reveals something new.
