You have a long weekend and want to get away, perhaps “Off the Beaten Fairway.”  Where could you go for 72 hours and have the most magical time?

Sun Valley, Idaho is known for several things that make it a special and beloved destination.  With Bald Mountain (locally known as “Old Baldy”), skiing and winter sports are high on the list.   Then there are the cultural & historic parts of the town. Writers, artists, actors, and singers have all spent time in the majestic mountain getaway.  In fact, Ernest Hemingway wrote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” in Sun Valley.  All fine and dandy, but what about golf?

Sun Valley’s history began in 1936 when Averell Harriman, the chairperson of the Union-Pacific Railroad, decided to build the first destination ski resort in North America.  Mirroring European ski areas and how they adapted to other seasons, it was important to find sports/interests for the summer season.  In 1937, Sun Valley became a year-around destination, offering golf, biking, horseback riding, hiking, and the arts (more on all of this in the Sun Valley Resort review).  With a European flair, sophistication, and respect for the environment, golf in Sun Valley embodies the true spirit of the game.   So let’s go!
