The Niyama of Purity/Cleanliness

There is a particular kind of clarity of which the best rounds of golf are made. Not the absence of difficulty or the presence of perfect conditions, but a quality of inner cleanliness that allows you to meet each shot without the residue of what came before it. The drive to the course free of the morning’s tension. The first tee entered without the weight of yesterday’s round. The swing unencumbered by the mental clutter of expectation, comparison, or self-doubt. That clarity has a name in yoga philosophy, and it is saucha.
