Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club
Paraparaumu, New Zealand
Blending the Very Best of Everything
AMW Faves List
Favorite Par 3 – #16 – as classic of a par 3 in golf. Sitting in the history of Paraparaumu Beach, this hole takes you on a journey, though short, through the sands of time. Just walking the dunes and native grass your mind is captivated to a different time.
Favorite Par 4 – #15 – from the tee, the fairway begins blindly down the narrows with a backdrop that is mere perfection. The slopes and dips create a memorable challenge but it is the spiritual surroundings that will stay in the heart.
Favorite Par 5 – #12 – just a beautiful hole from start to finish. The hole is narrow, flatter, and shorter with a great opportunity for birdie. Native trees line the left and natural dunes to the right. Visually warming and wonderfully challenging.
Favorite Hole Design – #13 – standing on the tee, your eye is drawn first to the Tararua Ranges, rising quietly in the distance, sometimes snow-capped in winter, beautiful and indifferent. The 13th is a demanding par 4 shaped by the Divide, whose winds can turn promise into trouble in a heartbeat.
Easiest Hole – #6 – a slightly generous fairway that reaches into the distance, into the New Zealand terrain. The bumps along the way feel a bit like pinball wizard but overall picture is mesmerizing and sublime.
Hardest Hole – #3 – a hole that can set the tone early in the round. Hard to navigate the hills and valleys, twists and turns of the land. The mental challenge is to accept where the ball lands and play it from there.
Favorite Extra Sighting – view of the Tararua range.
Favorite Apres Golf – walk on the beach, sight-seeing in Wellington
Where to Stay – Wharekauhau on Palliser Bay, Greenmantle Estate Hotel
Where to Eat – Wharekauhau, Lustre Kitchen, 50-50 restaurant
