There is something about the drive into the Latah Valley that feels like a quiet descent into another world. The city of Spokane fades behind you, replaced by rolling hills, tall grasses, and the slow, winding presence of Latah Creek below. It is peaceful here yet deceptively so.

Long before fairways were carved into this land, before tee boxes and greens gave shape to the hills, this valley was part of a much older and darker story. The creek once widely known as Hangman Creek was a lifeline for Native peoples who lived with the rhythm of the land. It provided water, food, and passage, and carried with it a spirit that still lingers, if you’re willing to feel for it. But history here is not without its shadows.
