Torrey Pines Golf Course – South
La Jolla, california
Play Along the Shores of the Pacific
AMW Faves List
Favorite Par 3 – #16 – hard not to pick this hole as a favorite as it rides back toward the ocean, bringing the wind squarely into play. Club selection can vary by three or four clubs depending on how much bite there is in the breeze.
Favorite Par 4 – #7 – a real gem heading back toward the ocean. Varying levels of rough can wreak havoc on anything straying from the fairway, and the slightly elevated green makes getting up and down a genuine challenge.
Favorite Par 5 – #9 – the final hole on the front nine may not be the most picturesque, but it is a legitimate par 5. Most will reach in three, and the hole demands to be played that way, with strategic bunkering positioned throughout to dictate every decision.
Favorite Hole Design – #3 – the most photographed hole on the course and rightly so. Playing directly toward the Pacific from an elevated tee box, the design calls for anything from a short iron to a metal wood, entirely dependent on the wind.
Easiest Hole – #18 – a lovely finishing hole that has stood the test of time. This shorter par 5 tempts most into an aggressive play, but the pond guarding the front of the green is ready to claim anyone led astray by ego.
Hardest Hole – #4 – a big hole that runs parallel to the coastline, making focus just that much harder. It’s a stunning test that plays long and most often into a demanding crosswind.
Favorite Extra Sighting – Black’s Beach 🙂
Favorite Apres Golf – walk along the beach, watch the sunset over the Pacific.
Where to Stay – Lodge at Torrey Pines, L’Auberge Del Mar, Estancia La Jolla
Where to Eat – The Grill at Torrey Pines, A.R. Valentien, Nine-Ten, Addison, Herb & Wood, Solare, Trilogy Sanctuary (vegan)
