The first of the Eight Limbs, the Yamas, meaning “restraint” or “reigning in”, invite us to become deeply aware of our thoughts and actions, both on and off the course. In golf, that awareness is everything. How you respond to a wayward drive, a missed putt, or an unexpected bounce reveals far more about your game than your swing mechanics ever will. By learning to pause before reacting, you create space for clarity and from clarity comes better decisions, steadier focus, and a truer relationship with the game.
The Yamas are not about perfection. They are about intention. When you practice restraint after a poor shot, you free yourself from frustration long enough to reset, refocus, and commit fully to the next one. That is where real improvement lies.
It’s worth noting that the Yamas are distinct from the second limb, the Niyamas, which we’ll explore soon. Together, the two form a complementary pair, the Yamas shaping how we engage with the world around us, and the Niyamas guiding our inner discipline. Both are essential to playing, and living, with integrity.
What makes the Yamas especially relevant to golf is their insistence that meaningful change is gradual. Whether you’re rebuilding your swing, developing a new shot, or learning to trust your read on the green, progress happens one deliberate step at a time. Break the goal into smaller, manageable pieces and approach each one with presence and purpose. The Yamas give you the framework to do exactly that, helping you become not just a more skilled golfer, but the golfer you were always capable of being.
